Medusa’s Daughter

Spring 2008

Medusa’s Daughter

All that fifteen-year-old Maia Volokos, who has grown up in a European traveling sideshow, knows of herself is that her hair has an angry consciousness of its own. Born with writhing ringlets and viperous locks, Maia, has been told for as long as she can remember that she is less than human. But a chance encounter outside a small German town inspires her to seek the dangerous truth about herself and the parents she never knew. In the process, she unravels the lies that have controlled her life since childhood.

Medusa’s Daughter is a journey of self discovery, a thrilling, adventurous flight from hopelessness to freedom in the Europe of the 1970s, back when traveling shows still turned profits, when human freaks made for exciting viewing, and men like Rictus Fitch ruled over them with iron fists.

The story has been written in three specific formats. Created for teenagers, there’s the graphic novella, a beautiful, simple read with about fourteen exciting, full-page images by Steven Parke as well as a few smaller pieces in the scene breaks. The Graphic novel, written for the same age group, is a step up in complexity as well as loaded, page after pager, with more masterful, breathtaking art by Mr. Parke. Some books will also come with soundtracks created by the woman who scores the television shows Heroes, Carnival, and Bionic Woman. Finally, there’s the novel that is Medusa’s Daughter, which explores much more thoroughly the lives, conflicts, places, and the motivations of the primary characters. Jonathon has written all three variations on the story, so if you like his work, you’ll be blown away Maia’s adventure and the diversity and nuances of each story version.
